The rainy season, or “tsuyu” in Japanese, is going to begin soon in Japan. It can be a challenge to commute to school or work in June when it rains every day and there are no holidays.

In southern Vietnam, where the weather is warm all year around, there is also a rainy season, but it is a bit longer than “tsuyu” in Japan. This season begins in June and ends in October. Squall, which refers to sudden-fall-and-stop rain, is a feature of the rainy season in southern Vietnam. Since people don’t know when it will rain, a raincoat is essential when going out. However, because a squall can happen or stop suddenly, there are times when the rain has already finished by the time you stop your bike and put on a raincoat.

Japanese people often put up their umbrella as soon as it rains. During “tsuyu”, you can see many people walking down in the street with various types of umbrellas such as transparent ones. It’s such a romantic scene in the eyes of a foreigner like me. Also, hydrangeas bloom beautifully all at once during “tsuyu”. The fresh beauty of hydrangeas, which repel rain drops, will brighten up your mood on those rainy days.

In southern Vietnam, the rainy season is also the season of delicious fruits. You can only eat mangosteen, which is known as the queen of fruits, or rambutan in the rainy season.

You may feel uncomfortable when it rains day after day but let’s enjoy what we can only enjoy during the rainy season.

日本ではそろそろ梅雨に入ります。祝日が一日もない6月に毎日雨が降る中で、通勤・通学するのは大変ですよね。

気候が一年中暖かいベトナムの南部では雨季もありますが、日本の梅雨より少し長く、6月から10月ごろにかけて続きます。スコールは南部の雨季の特徴で、急に降って急に上がる雨のことです。いつスコールが来るか分からないので、ベトナム人が外出する時に不可欠なものはレインコートです。しかし、スコールは突発的な雨なので、バイクや自転車を止めて、レインコートをかぶったとたん、もう雨が上がるという時もあります。

日本人は雨が降ったらすぐに傘をさします。梅雨の時期には、たくさんの人が透明なビニール傘など、様々な傘をさして歩いている風景をよく見かけます。それは外国人の私から見ればロマンティックな風景でもあります。また、梅雨に入ったら、アジサイが一斉に綺麗な花を咲かせます。きらきらと雨粒をはじくアジサイの瑞々しい美しさは気分を一気に明るくしてくれます。

ベトナムの南部では、雨季は果物が美味しいシーズンでもあり、果物の女王と呼ばれるマンゴスチンやランブータンなどは雨季にしか食べられないものです。

雨の多い日が続くと、気分が億劫になりがちですが、雨季の時期にしか味わえないものを楽しみながら過ごしましょう。
