Lan, tell us about your cultural experiences! September 2023 Issue

Summer is almost over and it has started to feel like autumn. This summer, I was again invited to be a lecturer at a Vietnamese cooking class for parents and children at “MIEA Around the World” series held by the Matsudo International Exchange Association (MIEA).
Last year, I introduced how to make “Pho tron” (Pho salad) and “Banh troi” (floating rice cake). This year, I chose to introduce a dessert called “Che bot bang” and a snack called “Banh trang nuong”.
“Che bot bang” is a classic Vietnamese dessert with coconut milk and tapioca, which is also served at Vietnamese restaurants in Japan.
“Banh trang nuong” is a popular street food in Vietnam that uses rice paper, which made the participants surprised as I expected. This is because rice paper is usually used to make fresh or fried spring rolls while “banh trang nuong” is made by grilling rice paper loaded with ingredients over charcoal. When making “banh trang nuong” at home, you can also grill it on a frying pan.
Most of the children who participated the cooking class were girls. They all seemingly like cooking and were able to cut ingredients neatly. When making “banh trang nuong”, I just showed children once, and they were able to make it right away. Seeing children enjoying making “banh trang nuong” one by one made me feel happy.
It was a great opportunity to introduce Vietnamese culture and have international exchange through cooking class. I hope the children will make Vietnamese food at home for their families. 　

夏もそろそろ終わりを告げ、秋の気配を感じる頃となりましたね。今年の夏はまた松戸市国際交流協会が主催する「MIEA世界めぐり」で親子向けのベトナム料理教室の講師をさせていただきました。
去年はフォーのサラダとバインチョイ（黒糖白玉だんご）の作り方を紹介しましたが、今年はタピオカのチェーとバインチャンヌンというおやつにしました。
タピオカのチェーはベトナムの定番スイーツで、日本にあるベトナム料理店でもデザートとして提供されています。
バインチャンヌンはライスペーパーを使うベトナムで人気の屋台料理で、予想通り参加者を驚かせました。なぜなら、ライスペーパーと言えば、生春巻きや揚げ春巻きが定番ですが、バインチャンヌンは具材を載せたライスペーパーを直接、網に載せて焼いたものです。家庭で作る場合はフライパンでも焼けます。
料理教室に参加した子どもは殆どが女の子です。みんな料理が好きなようで、材料を綺麗に切ることができました。バインチャンヌンを作るとき、私が一回作って見せただけで、子供たちはすぐ作れました。子供たちがバインチャンヌンを1枚目、それから2枚目を楽しく作っているのを見て大変嬉しかったです。
料理を通して文化紹介や国際交流をする良い機会となりました。今後はご家庭でもベトナムのおやつを作ってもらえたらと思います。
