Christmas in Vietnam
Although Buddhism has had a strong impact in Vietnam, in recent years when Christmas comes, you can see colorful decorations in the streets or in shopping malls. Besides, on Christmas Eve, it’s not unusual to see many Santas riding motorbikes with bags of presents on their backs. Actually, those Santas are the delivery staff of toy stores.
Yes, on Christmas day, toy stores in Vietnam offer Santa-delivery-present service. Because Vietnam is a world of motorbikes, using motorbike for delivery is faster and more convenient than car or truck.
In Vietnam, Christmas is not an important event for families except for Christians, but on Christmas Eve the streets become lively. Young people and families with their children go see the illumination at churches. Since it never snows in Vietnam, there is no chance to see white Christmas but in the southern areas-where it’s hot throughout the year - there is a “summer Christmas”.

仏教の影響が強いベトナムでは、近年クリスマスの時期になると、街中や商業施設でも色鮮やかなデコレーションが見られます。クリスマスイブには、サンタがプレゼント袋を背負ってバイクに乗るという面白い光景も珍しくないです。実は、そのサンタたちはおもちゃ屋さんの配達スタッフです。
そう、クリスマスになると、おもちゃ屋さんはサンタがプレゼントを宅配してくれるサービスを提供します。ベトナムはバイク天国ですから、配達には車やトラックよりもバイクを使った方が速くて便利な手段となります。
ベトナムでは、クリスマスはキリスト教徒以外にとっては、家族が集まって過ごす大切なイベントではありませんが、クリスマスイブには教会でのイルミネーションを見に行ったりする若者や子連れのファミリーで街がかなり賑わいます。また、ベトナムでは雪が降りませんので、ホワイト・クリスマスはまずありませんし、常夏の南部ではむしろ夏のクリスマスもあります。
