Lan, tell us about your cultural experiences! July 2025 Issue

Sumo is Japan’s national sport and ever since I started living here, I had been curious to see it in person. That opportunity finally came in January 2024, when I attended a sumo tournament at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. Seeing the wrestlers clash with full force in the ring, right before my eyes, not through a screen, was truly overwhelming.
I feel very fortunate that Matsudo City, where I live, is home to the Sadogatake stable, a renowned sumo training facility established in 1955. Over the years, it has produced many top-division wrestlers (makuuchi), including several who reached sumo’s highest ranks Yokozuna (grand champion), Ozeki (champion), and Sekiwake (junior champion).
After the January 2024 tournament, Kotonowaka - a Sekiwake from the Sadogatake stable - was promoted to the rank of Ozeki. This was a historic achievement: the first time in 69 years that a wrestler from Matsudo had attained this prestigious rank. The news received widespread media coverage and was warmly celebrated by the local community. I could truly feel how deep sumo is respected and cherished in Japanese culture.

What made me even happier was that just last month, the Matsudo International Exchange Association (MIEA) organized a special viewing of a morning training session at the Sadogatake stable for foreign residents. I didn’t want to miss this opportunity, so I signed up immediately. I was thrilled to watch the practice session up close - just one meter away - of the wrestlers and trainees, including Ozeki Kotozakura Masakatsu (formerly Kotonowaka).
Hearing the impact of bodies clashing and witnessing the intensity of their daily training was a truly moving experience.
Sumo is more than just a contest of strength, it is deeply rooted in Shinto, Japan’s ancient indigenous religion, and has long been performed as a sacred ritual. If you are interested in experiencing a uniquely Japanese cultural tradition, I highly recommend attending a sumo tournament.

日本の国技といえば、やはり相撲ですね。私も日本に暮らし始めてからずっと気になっていたのですが、ようやく2024年1月に、東京・両国国技館で本場所を観戦する機会を得ました。テレビでしか見たことのなかった力士たちが、土俵の上でぶつかり合う姿は本当に迫力があり、圧倒されました。
ありがたいことに、松戸市内には「佐渡ヶ嶽部屋（さどがたけべや）」という有名な相撲部屋があります。1955年に創設されたこの部屋は、これまで横綱、大関、関脇など多くの幕内力士を育ててきました。
そして、2024年1月場所後には、佐渡ヶ嶽部屋所属の関脇琴ノ若（ことのわか）が大関に昇進し、松戸市出身の力士としては69年ぶりの快挙ということで、メディアにも大きく取り上げられ、市民の間でも祝福の声が広がっていました。相撲がどれほど日本人に愛されているのか、私もその熱気から実感することができました。

さらに嬉しいことに、先月、松戸市国際交流協会が外国人市民を対象に佐渡ヶ嶽部屋での朝稽古の見学を開催してくれました。私もこのチャンスを見逃さず、すぐに参加しました。そして、琴桜将傑（ことざくら　まさかつ）大関（旧名：琴ノ若）をはじめとする現役力士や力士養成員の朝稽古を、わずか1メートルの距離から見学することができました。身体と身体がぶつかる音がはっきり聞こえ、日々の厳しい訓練を肌で感じる貴重な体験となりました。
