Mid-Autumn Festival in Vietnam

In Japan, when the summer ends and the weather begins to cool down, there is an event called “Otsukimi” where people enjoy the night of the full moon. There is also the same event in Vietnam which is called “Mid Autumn Festival”. It is held on 15th August by Lunar calendar when the moon appears to be the brightest and most round in a year.
In Vietnam, on Mid-Autumn’s night, the whole family will gather and watch the full moon while eating round, or square mooncakes. Additionally, the children will also hold star-shaped lanterns and walk in a procession around the streets, or perform the Lion Dance (Shishimai in Japanese).
Traditionally, when speaking of mooncakes, there are two types: white and brown mooncakes, and each have a distinct shape. The white round-shape mooncake is called “Banh deo”, and represents the full moon. The brown square-shape mooncake is called “Banh nuong”, and represents the earth. However, nowadays, mooncakes take various shapes such as fishes, flowers…etc.
In the eyes of the Japanese, the shadow of the full moon looks like a rabbit eating rice cakes. But the Vietnamese see it as a man named Cuoi, a character of a folk tale, sitting under a banyan tree. It is said that the reason children hold lanterns and walk around the streets is in order to guide Cuoi, who has flown to the moon, back to the earth.
The streets in Vietnam are very lively on Mid-Autumn’s night, so if you have a chance, please enjoy it.
