Lan, tell us about your cultural experiences! January 2024 Issue

Over the past 2 years, as a CIR (Coordinator for International Relations), I have held several events to introduce Vietnamese culture. During that time, I found out cooking together is a good way for people to feel closer to a different culture and have best memories.
The other day, I held a Vietnamese cooking class at Chiba Prefectural Matsudo Kokusai High School for the purpose of understanding Vietnamese culture and deepening international exchange. 30 students from the school’s cooking club and food design course participated the event. The students and I cooked a Vietnamese classic dessert called “che bot bang” (coconut tapioca pudding) and a Vietnamese popular street food called “banh trang nuong” (grilled Vietnamese ricepaper).
It seems that most of the participants have never tried Vietnamese food before, but when I asked them what they thought after tasting the food, they said “The flavor was easy to eat”, “It was delicious”. Surprisingly, a student seemed to think that Vietnamese people eat with hands. I think maybe it’s because the “banh trang nuong” we cooked was a kind of snack to eat with hands.
I’m not used to teaching cooking, so I believe I couldn’t instruct the students so well. However, seeing their smiling faces during the class made me feel very happy. By making and trying Vietnamese food themselves this time, I hope the students were able to know, even just a little bit, the taste and traditions of Vietnam.

この2年間で、国際交流員としてベトナムの文化を紹介するイベントを何度か実施しましたが、参加者にとって異文化を身近に感じられ、思い出に残りやすいものはやはり料理ではないかと思います。
先日、ベトナムの文化について理解し、国際交流を深めるという目的で、千葉県立松戸国際高等学校でベトナム料理講習会を行いました。参加したのは生徒のうち、クッキング部員とフードデザイン受講生の30名でした。生徒たちと一緒に作った料理はベトナムの定番スイーツであるタピオカのチェーとライスペーパーを使う人気の屋台料理であるバインチャンヌン（ライスペーパーお好み焼き）でした。
参加者は殆どがベトナム料理を食べたことがなかったようですが、試食した後に感想を聞いてみたところ、「食べやすかった」「美味しかった」との声を頂きました。また、講習会で紹介したバインチャンヌンは手で食べるおやつであるせいか、ベトナム人は普段手で食べると思った生徒もいました。
もちろん私は調理を指導することにあまり慣れておらず、生徒たちにうまく伝えられなかったところもありますが、生徒たちの楽しそうな顔が見れて嬉しかったです。今回は、生徒たちがベトナムの料理を自分で作ってから食べることで、ベトナムの味覚や伝統を少しでも知ってもらう機会になれば嬉しいです。
