  • Compulsory education in Japan lasts for 9 years from age 6 to age 15.
  • Elementary school is open to children from the first April after the age of 6, and provides students 6 years of education.
  • After completing elementary school, students can enter junior high school where they receive 3 more years of education.
  • High schools provide general and specialized education for those who have completed their compulsory education at the elementary and junior high school levels, and usually last 3 more years.

Children of foreign nationalities living in Japan can enroll in public elementary/junior-high schools if they wish, and receive the same education as children of Japanese nationality for free.

(1)Guide to Schools, Enrollment, and Transfers

1. Elementary Schools

There are 46 elementary schools (45 public and 1 private) in the city.

Procedures for entering elementary school

The Matsudo City Board of Education will send the parents/guardians of pre-elementary school children a School Entry Health Check Notice in October and an Enrollment Notice in November. This Enrollment Notice lists the child’s name, date of birth, the name of the school he/she will attend, and information about the enrollment ceremony. If you are a household with a child expecting enrollment and have not received this notice, please contact us. If you move into the city after the Enrollment Notice from Matsudo has been sent out, you will receive the Notice after the date you submit your notification of moving-in.

■ Public School Choice System

By using Public School Choice System, new first-year elementary and junior high school students can choose to attend a school in an adjacent school district if they can safely walk to it at the time of their enrollment.

A comprehensive physical examination is offered every fall to children who are entering elementary school the following academic year.

■ After-school Kids Club

Matsudo City has childcare facilities called 'After-school Kids Club", that take care of elementary school children whose parents are away from home during the day for reasons such as work, etc., and to provide them with sound upbringing after school. These clubs are available at all municipal elementary schools within Matsudo.

2. Junior High Schools

There are 22 junior high schools (20 public and 2 private) in the city.

Procedures for entering junior high school

The Matsudo City Board of Education will send an Enrollment Notice in November.
※New first-year elementary and junior high school students can choose to attend a school in an adjacent school district if they can safely walk to it at the time of their enrollment.

If your child does not enter a public elementary/junior-high school

If your child has been admitted to a national/prefectural/private elementary or junior high school, please submit the Enrollment Notice and the original copy of the letter of acceptance (permission) issued from the school your child will attend to the School Affairs Division. (Mail-in accepted)

3. When changing elementary or junior high schools

What you need when transferring schools

  • Documents issued by your previous school … 1) Certificate of Enrollment (Zaigaku Shoumeisho) 2) Certificate for Provision of Textbooks (Kyoukasho Kyuuyo Shoumeisho)
  • Procedures … At the city hall of the municipality where your new school is located, inform the city hall staff of your change of school in addition to your change of address

4. Matsudo Municipal Daiichi Junior High School - Mirai Bunko (Evening School)

Mirai Bunko is a public night junior high school

  • Classes are held 5 days a week, approximately 200 days a year.
  • Students study a junior high school’s curriculum.
  • Certified teachers teach the classes.
  • You can obtain a diploma if you study hard enough.
  • Tuition is free.

“Matsudo Daiichi Junior High School - Mirai Bunko” is the first night junior high school to open in Matsudo since the enforcement of Act to Guarantee Access to Supplementary Learning. (“Mirai Bunko” roughly translates to “The future branch school”). Those who wish to enroll in, please contact us after reading the following information.

■ Call for Applications for the Mirai Bunko School Course Enrollment

We are accepting the applications for the 2024 enrollment. Please note that there may be changes to the enrollment trial schedule, etc. depending on the Novel Coronavirus infection situation.

   School tour dates: February 28th (Wed.) , March 1st (Fri.) & 4th (Mon.)
Please participate in a school tour on one of the dates above. Respective students will receive a briefing and attend classes for 2 hours at Mirai Bunko, then fill out an “Enrollment Trial Application.”Those who wish to be admitted to the school will need to participate in the enrollment trial and apply for enrollment as described below.

■ Trial and School Admission Process for the 2024 Enrollment

  【For applications between January 29th and March 4th】
   Period for Enrollment Trial:   March 5th (Tue.) through March 15th (Fri.)

The student will attend 4-hour classes every day for 2 weeks. Those who wish to enroll in 2023 courses at Mirai Bunko will fill out and submit an application for enrollment on the last day of the enrollment trial.

About Mirai Bunko

   Mirai Bunko is a public night junior high school.

  • Classes are held 5 days a week, approximately 200 days a year
  • Students will study junior high school’s curriculum

  • There’s no charge for the classes
Who can enroll in Mirai Bunko?

  Those who satisfy all four of the following conditions and are approved by the Matsudo City Board of Education.
1. Aged over 15, and passed the age set for receiving compulsory education
2. Lives in Matsudo City
※ If your residence is at another city in Chiba prefecture other than Matsudo, you need to acquire “Fukushin-sho” (the permission) from your city.
3. Has not graduated junior high school, or wishes to re-study for some reason such as absenteeism, etc.
4. Does not have a problem with the Mirai Bunko’s time schedule and learning

Several times a year in Chiba Prefecture, school teachers and volunteer members hold school orientation programs. The orientation covers information about Japanese high schools, entrance exam, education system, admission procedures, fees, etc. Elementary and junior high school students and their parents who wish to attend high school in Japan are most welcome to join us.

Matsudo High School has two departments: General Education and International Humanities. Student recruitment and entrance examinations are conducted at the same time as those for prefectural high schools. Relevant information will also be announced in “Koho Matsudo”, Matsudo City’s official free paper. For the General Education Department, foreign applicants are also offered a special assessment for enrollment.

6. Classes for Special Needs Education

Classes for Special Needs Education are small classes established within regular public elementary and junior high
schools to provide children with special needs, such as physical/mental disabilities, an education specially designed for
each child depending on their circumstances. In Matsudo, there are many different classes designed to support a wide variety of disabilities, such as, intellectual disabilities, speech disabilities, autism, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, visual impairment, and health impairment, as well as special learning support classes.

In Matsudo, there are three schools for children with special needs: Prefectural Matsudo School for Special Needs Education (for the physically challenged), Prefectural Tsukushi School for Special Needs Education (for the intellectually challenged), and Prefectural Yakiri School for Special Needs Education (for the intellectually challenged). Japanese Language Volunteers

Japanese Language Volunteers provide individualized instruction on Japanese necessary for daily life, in Japanese, to students who have difficulty with or poor understanding of Japanese.

Child's Mother Tongue Language Volunteers

Child's Mother Tongue Language Volunteers provide individualized Japanese instruction in a student’s native language to students who have almost no understanding of Japanese to help them adjust to school life.

As a child grows and develops, various problems and worries are sure to arise. To help parents deal with these issues, we provide consultations where one can receive advice, help, and professional insight.

Examples of Consultation Topics

Issues related to school life, such as reluctancy to go to school, truancy, trouble fitting-in, friendship issues, aversion
to studying, restlessness, etc. Physical worries concerning limbs, eyes, and ears, etc. Examinations and counseling may be provided depending on the situation.

Requesting a Consultation

Please call the Educational Research Center to make an appointment for an education consultation (free).

2. Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency

We conduct guidance and protective custody activities, etc. to proactively prevent juvenile delinquency and promote
sound development in children.
To those ends, we are constantly working with the Children’s Welfare Division, police stations, Child Guidance Center,
family courts, health and welfare centers, and schools, etc.
