「レッツゴー キャム！」Cam, Ikuzo! Come follow Camden’s journey! February 2024

On January 18th, I held a "Partner Lecture" (pa-tona- kouza) within Matsudo City with Michael Dowd, who is a Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) for the Matsudo International Exchange Association (MIEA). Partner lectures that are hosted by Matsudo City's CIRs are held with the purpose of increasing international understanding and concern within organizations and other groups within Matsudo.

For Michael’s speech, he discussed the ongoing importance of preserving the culture of the indigenous people of Australia, who are still being recognized today in Australian culture. For this purpose, a tradition called “Welcome to Country” is often performed, which allows for the land’s native people to give consent for their land to be used by other people. Before events such as sports matches, there is a welcoming ceremony carried out by a recognized elder of the local region’s tribe, and sometimes the native people of Australia known as the Aboriginal people put their culture on display during these ceremonies through a music or dance performance, or a traditional smoking ceremony. The Australian government recommends that this ceremony is held during events and other gatherings because it allows for the people of Australia to be more conscious of the long history and cultural importance of the local region where the event is taking place.

For my speech, I was able to introduce various cultures that began in the United States. Americans may take a lot of pride in some of the unique cultures that started in America, however I think even Americans are still unfamiliar with the historical figures who are considered to be the originators of such cultures. For example, jazz music originated in New Orleans, and the person who is considered to be the first to create jazz music was an artist by the name of Buddy Bolden, and as for the person who eventually became the first to evolve jazz music into rock and roll, that was a St. Louis man by the name of Chuck Berry, who is known as the "Father of Rock and Roll." This lecture gave me the opportunity to let the participants hear some of the early music by these two artists, which ended up having a wide influence around the world.

This time’s lecture was held for a club within Matsudo City, but in the future I would like to host more “MIEA World Tour” lectures, which anyone can participate in, where I can introduce more things I like about American culture. 1月18日に松戸市国際交流協会（MIEA）の国際交流員（CIR）のマイケルさんと松戸市内で「パートナー講座」を行いました。松戸市の国際交流員が開催するパートナー講座の目的は市内の団体等を対象に国際理解・関心を深めていくことです。

マイケルさんの演説では、今でもオーストラリアで認識されている先住民の文化を維持する必要性についての話がありました。オーストラリアで行っている「ウェルカム・トゥ・カントリー」（国へようこそ）という習慣で土地供与をしていることが認められています。スポーツイベント等の前に、地域の氏族の上級メンバーとして認識されている方による歓迎式が行われ、アボリジナルという先住民の喫煙の儀式も行ったり伝統的な音楽やダンスのパフォーマンスもあったりします。この儀式をイベントの際に行うと、イベントが開催されている場所において周辺地域の長い歴史や文化的重要性を意識しながら生活を送ることができるという理由で、オーストラリアの政治が勧めています。

私の演説では、アメリカで始まった文化について紹介することができました。アメリカ人にとってはアメリカで始まった文化を誇りとして思っているかもしれませんが、その文化の創始者となった方々はアメリカ人の中でも良く知られていないことが多いです。例えば、ニューオーリンズ市でジャズの音楽を最初に作成したと言われている方はバディ・ボールデン氏で、セントルイス市でジャズをロックンロールに最初に進化させた方は「ロック界の伝説」と言われているチャック・ベリー氏です。この2人の音楽を参加者に聞いていただき、世界中に大きい影響を与えたアメリカの昔の文化に触れる良い機会となりました。
