Look down. Manholes. While they may be standard pieces of city infrastructure, they also serve as metal canvases for beautiful works of art. They’re like murals, but on the floor, so you may have not noticed them before.

Looking back, wherever I’ve gone in Japan, I have been fascinated by the variety of artistic manholes I can find in every city. Matsudo has several manhole designs, such as koalas to commemorate our sister city of Whitehorse, and the Yakiri-no-watashi boat to celebrate our famous tourism honeypot. A few cities in America have also experimented with their manhole designs, but they’re nowhere near as ubiquitous as in Japan.
Look out for manhole covers the next time you go for a walk. Art’s all around!

　下を向けば、マンホール。都市インフラとはいえ、美しいアートを表現する金属のキャンバスという役割も兼ねます。地面にありますので、皆様はこのアートに気が付いたことはないかもしれません。
　思い返すと、日本のどの都市に行っても、多様な芸術的なマンホールがあり興味が引かれました。松戸のマンホールはさまざまなデザインがあります。例えば、姉妹都市のホワイトホース市を象徴するコアラのデザインや、有名な観光地の矢切の渡しのデザイン。マンホールでアートを展示する試みがアメリカのいくつかの都市でも展開されていますが、比較にならないほど日本には多くあると思います。
　次回散歩する時は、足元にも目を向けてみて下さい。あっちこっちにアートがありますよ！
