Meet 'CIR' Javier!

Eating corn at a festival

Dear readers,

Hi there! My name is Javier Gutierrez and I am honored to serve as the newest Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) for Matsudo City. This is my first time ever visiting Matsudo, but I very much look forward to starting my new life here.

Redondo Beach near Torrance

Have any of you ever visited the United States? If so, have you been to the best state, California? As you can probably tell, I grew up in California for most of my life so I am very fond of my state, and my hometown is Torrance, a small town south of Los Angeles and close to the ocean. I have also lived in Boston and Japan several times before, and I am grateful to have had these opportunities to travel and experience new worlds.

While I'm not a surfer like a lot of people think I am (although I hear many people in Chiba love surfing, so maybe I'll learn), all the same I love nature and the outdoors a lot! I enjoy walking, hiking, and cycling, and ever since I was a child I have loved animals of all kinds (my favorite animal is the spider). On the weekends I love getting out of my house and exploring new places, and since Matsudo is such a large city I know I will have a good time.

In addition to learning about new places, I also appreciate meeting new people and learning about who they are. As a practitioner of Sadou, I believe strongly in the idea of “ichi-go ichi-e,” or “once-in-a-lifetime” events, so I try to appreciate every encounter I have with someone, even if it’s with someone I will see again. If you see me around town, please feel free to come up and say hi! I may come across as a very serious person, but deep inside I like making new friends.

Although I am still very inexperienced, with the help of my fellow CIR Ha-san and my coworkers, I will do my best to help you all, the people of Matsudo, and hopefully contribute to the city's international appeal.

Thank you for your attention,
Javier

P.S. Please call me by my nickname, Javi!
